book review

“This graphic novel by David Mansch focuses on several present-day struggles of parents: the impact of video games on the brains of the young; family time missed because of the addictive nature of video games-no matter how fun; and the imagination in each of us that goes untapped with the busyness in our world. Mansch unravels these themes with such poise that the reader gets lost in the exciting story while still absorbing the importance of family values and the good-natured, pure entertainment. The novel’s pictures are incredible and capture the feelings and mood of the story every step of the way. My grandkids, Jack, age 9, and Norah, age 10, both read the book and enjoyed it so much. Hearing their giggles, told me that this book is spot on with the comics and timeless sense of humor of the young, especially the boys of this age group. Little sister, Kitty, makes the story come alive for female readers too. Adults will enjoy the clever antics of Baron Buttz and Steve as well as the hilarious alliteration and the mix of video game jargon and potty jokes. Any child interested in video games of any kind or just superhero fans will love Mansch’s S.N.O.T.S Call of Doody. Readers will be very anxious to devour the next book of the series.”

Newton Bean from SNOTS Call of Doody graphic novel

newton bean

Headstrong, cocky, and competitive, Newton is the number one gamer in the universe and leader of the SNOTS. He’s a man of action who doesn't always think with his head, but with his heart. Newton does what it takes to get the job done and prides himself on being a good leader. Small in brains and big in heart, he never gives up. Newton loves what the SNOTS stand for, and is proud to be a part of it all. Not bad for a twelve-year-old Superpixel ninja!

IPP2 from SNOTS Call of Doody graphic novel

IPP2

IPP2 is a patient sidekick and friend. The droid is often the voice of reason during the SNOTS adventures. He’s more than just a sidekick to Newton, they are family. IPP2 met Newton right off of the assembly line. Over the years IPP2 has kept numerous scrapbooks about each of their adventures. He is the brains behind the operation, often pointing out the obvious to an otherwise clueless Newton. When Rusty joins the SNOTS poor IPP2’s hands are definitely full.

Childhood boredom is his greatest foe, and his active imagination and impulsiveness sometimes get him into trouble. He is good at one thing and one thing only. No, it’s not homework or cleaning his room. Rusty is a video game wizard.  His boredom slips away when he is gaming. Russ is never more focused than when he's in a digital challenge.

Kitty Crumb from SNOTS Call of Doody graphic novel

The only thing Kitty loves more than her favorite wrestler, Dr. Noogie, is her blankie. Mrs. Crumb gave the purple polka-dotted, soft, cuddly, blankie to Kitty. Be forewarned—never mess with Blankie, it’s the law. If Blankie is in trouble, this sweet little girl will transform into a warrior before your eyes. It doesn't matter if you’re her big dumb brother, or an evil prankster. She will go to the ends of the universe to find her Blankie.

Baron Buttz from SNOTS Call of Doody graphic novel

baron buttz

Little Baron Harry Buttz grew up on planet Nudnik 9 where pranks are a way of life. He was the butt of many jokes including but not limited to wedgies, noogies, whoopie cushions, stink bombs, and slime in his shoes. After being tarred and feathered in Jokes 101, he vowed no one would ever laugh at him again. Since that day Baron Buttz has relentlessly played his mischievous jokes on many unsuspecting planets always getting the last laugh. He is numero uno on the SNOTS most wanted list. That’s number one for those at home. He inherited his secret hide-out from his uncle Colonel Malodor Buttz, founder of Acme Evil Pranks.

Steve from SNOTS Call of Doody graphic novel

steve

Now very rare in the universe, Freeze Dried Instant Martians, were once very popular amongst those bent on universal domination. Just add water, and poof, you have yourself a Martian minion. Baron Buttz accidentally found one hidden in a pair of vintage boots he bought from an intergalactic thrift store. One day, while fixing an overflowing toilet, water leaked into one of the many holes in the leather. There was a burst of electricity, a poof of smoke, the boot blew apart, and a tiny Martian baby sat on Buttz's foot. With the plunger in hand, the Baron looked down at the little creature on his foot. Little Steven asked “Dada?”
